UPCOMING: 10th YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2022

This year’s 10th YOTA Summer Camp will be held in Karlovac, Croatia, from 6th to 13th August.
The organizers as well as all worldwide attending teams are looking forward to a week of training, fun and most important new friendships.

And also YOU can be part of the event!

YOTA Team Croatia (HRS) established an AWARD which everyone can achieve by working the YOUNGSTERS ON THE AIR during the Summer Camp 2022.

AWARD RULES:

1 Points

This award is awarded based on a defined number of points. Each QSO with a 9A YOTA station (9A22YOTA, 9A1YOTA, 9A2YOTA, 9A3YOTA, 9A4YOTA, 9A5YOTA, 9A100QO) in a different band/mode combination (slot) earns you one point. Duplicates do not count.
Valid QSOs will be QSOs made from August 6th 2022 0000 UTC to August 13th 2022 2359 UTC.

2 Scoring

You can obtain the award after having gathered the minimum required points (see Table 1 below).
Minimum required points differ for young operators (see Table 2 below).

In case of a tie for a platinum position, both operators will be awarded platinum awards, but the operator that gathered the maximum number of points sooner will be given the prize.

3 Young Operators

A young operator is an operator who was under the age of 25 on January 1st 2022. Before August 13th 2359 UTC,
young operators can register online, providing evidence of their age on January 1st 2022. This will allow them to
participate in the awards as young operators and have adjusted the minimum required points.

5 Bands and Modes

During the duration of the YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2022, the following bands and modes will be used.

Bands:

All amateur radio bands including WARC, VHF, UHF, and satellites.

Modes:

SSB, CW, digital (FT8, FT4, RTTY).

6 Awards

Awards will be presented online. All operators which have gathered the minimum required points will be able to
download their award after the final scoring after the end of the YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2022.

7 Prize

The prize for platinum position operators above the age of 25, is s 9A5N key plus a weekend break for a family of four in the city of Karlovac, Croatia.

First Session – YOTA Contest 2022

The first YOTA contest session of 2022 is coming up soon. Take the opportunity to test your stations a week prior the CQWPX CW contest, or better yet, open your radio station to the next generation and become a station sponsor. Give the next generation a chance at the radio and work the active ones in the YOTA Contest.

Thus, we want to remind you that we will have three (3) YOTA Contest sessions coming up in 2022 again. Lots of participants enjoyed the 2021 sessions already and thus we hope to get even more people involved into the events this year.

The upcoming three sessions will be taking place on the following days:

1st round | 21st May 2022 | 0800 – 1959 UTC
2nd round | 23rd July 2022 | 1000 – 2159 UTC
3rd round | 30th December 2022 | 1200 – 2359 UTC

So, are you ready to compete within the next YOTA Contest? Everyone in the ham radio community can take part, it takes place three times per year and only lasts 12 hours. Its aim is to increase the youngsters’ activity on the air, strengthening the reputation of the YOTA program and demonstrate the support for youngsters across the world.

IARU R1 Youth WG invited by CARS

The IARU R1 Youth Working Group recently got invited by the Cyprus Amateur Radio Society (CARS) into their Nicosia Heaquarters.

Philipp Springer (DK6SP — Chair, IARU R1 Youth Working Group) took up the opportunity and introduced a school class of very ambitious pupils into amateur radio in general as well as the IARU youth initiative, Youngsters On The Air.

CARS itself is holding license courses for youngsters on a regular basis and thus providing a well-recognized effort for the future of amateur radio.

“On the 1st of March this year, YOTA Japan was officially incorporated, and we reestablished  “Youngsters on the Air Japan” as a non-profitable association which is called, in terms of Japanese law, a general incorporated association.

Along with that, we introduce the membership system and committees to clarify that youngsters are the center of our activities.

By the incorporation, the membership system and committees, we will create more fields where our youngsters can be active, and will expand the activities.”

YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2022

Call for Applications

Today it is our big pleasure to announce that we finally continue with our 10th edition of YOTA Summer Camps this August. After the COVID-related cancellations in 2020 and 2021, HRS in Croatia generously offered to proceed the plannings.

Thus, we ask every Youth Coordinator in IARU Region 1 to apply for their national YOTA Teams according to the “Call of Applications”. One team can consist out of up to four (4) participants. For the details please see the attached file. The final number of participants per member society will be announced after the application deadline on May 8th, 2022.

Therefore, if you are a youngster willing to participate at this year’s YOTA Summer Camp, feel free to reach out to your national Youth Coordinator and show your interest today.

Final Scores + Awards of YOTA Contest 2021

We are happy to announce the final results of the third round of YOTA Contest 2021. They can now be found on ham-yota.com/contest. Congratulations to all for achieving great results among the competition.

Throughout the log submission period we received nearly 700 logs from all over the world. We want to thank everyone participating and thus introducing as well as engaging the youngsters around the world to the world of contesting. Without you all this event would not be possible!

Further, the YOTA Graphic Design Team did a great job providing the 2021 YOTA Contest Awards. They are now downloadable for all participants at ham-yota.com/contest.

Status Update: HAMCAMP during HAMRADIO 2022

The IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group just got informed by the DARC (German Amateur Radio Society) Youth Department about the status of the annual HAMCAMP during HAMRADIO fair in Friedrichshafen. Lots of worldwide youngsters use this opportunity to have an accomodation directly next to the Messe halls.

They state the following:

“According to current planning by Messe Friedrichshafen, Hamradio will be held this year from June 24 – 26, 2022. Further information can be found at https://www.hamradio-friedrichshafen.de/

However, HamCamp will not take place this year.

Here, with a heavy heart, we had to make a different consideration than for Hamradio. At HamCamp, over 100 youth and supervisors would be housed in a comparatively small space and a variety of joint activities would take place. Even if there were no longer any legal requirements at this point, we would not be able to implement a hygiene concept that would meet the expected course of the pandemic and achieve sufficient protection for all participants. We also had to take into account that the supervising persons bear a special obligation by fulfilling the duty of supervision for minors.

We did not make this decision lightly, as we were very much looking forward to a HamCamp. We hope for a better situation in 2023!”

However, there is still the possibility to stay at the camping site just next to the fair grounds.

We have implemented 8 different categories which also include special ones for youngsters (≤ 25 years old) only. Covering the 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m bands the competition will take place in CW and SSB modes.

The contest exchange used will be the age of the participating operators. Different ages also serve as multipliers during the contest.

Contacts between the own continent are worth 1 point, working DX is worth 3 points but the most points will be achieved by working youngsters. The younger the operator the more points one will get for the QSO.

The Annual School Club EU – Day on May 5th every year

Introduction The annual School Club EU – Day activity on May 5th is supposed to bring contacts with and among school amateur radio club and training stations and school girls and boys with own callsigns as well as contacts with every other station from all over Europe (WAE list).  The activity is a great way to get young operators on the air from their school shacks using their training call signs (or the school club’s call sign for irrelevant messages only – according to national law). Very often a new operator will be intimidated by the fear of not knowing what to say to the stranger on the other side of the radio. The exchange of information helps to overcome this fear in a low pressure contest format, it should not be made a “5-9-contest”, though. Operators are encouraged to take more time to chat beyond the exchange of the necessary details. A certificate of participation will be issued for stations that send an excerpt from the log of the day. There is also the chance of winning one of the fantastic prizes issued by AATiS.
