Changes within IARU Region 1 Youth WG
after Virtual General Conference 2020

Due to current COVID-19 regulations the original plan to hold the 25th IARU Region 1 General Conference as an in-person event in Novi Sad, Serbia, had to be cancelled. The organizing committee of the national society SRS, together with IARU R1, set up a Virtual General Conference (VGC) instead. Within this conference the Youth Working Group had the opportunity to present their achievements over the past three years on a separate session on Sunday 11 October. Over 30 Member Societies and 85 participants of all three IARU regions took part. Next to presenting the Youth WG activities there was an interactive session which included five questions. The outcome will be used with shaping the program for the next years.
During two more C3 meetings this week the Youth WG also had the chance to state recommendations which have been voted on today.

The Youth WG proposed the following three recommendations to the IARU Region 1 plenary:

  • Member Societies invite young non-members to their national and local youth amateur radio events in order to attract newcomers to amateur radio and possible new members for the Member Society.
  • Member Societies that do not yet have a Youth Coordinator are urged to appoint a Youth Coordinator before the end of Q1 2021.
  • Appoint Philipp Springer (DK6SP) as Youth WG Chair for the next three-year period.

All three recommendations have been approved and voted in favor of the Youth Working Group by the attending Member Societies.

Lisa Leenders (PA2LS) decided to step down as Youth WG Chair and hand the job over to the next generation. She received appreciation for her outstanding job over the past 9 years from all three IARU regions in the final plenary today.

Therefore, there was the opportunity for the younger generation to take over the vacancies. Philipp Springer (DK6SP) has been elected by the attending Member Societies to follow within Lisa’s footsteps as Youth WG Chair. Furthermore, Markus Großer (DL8GM) has been appointed as the Youth WG Vice Chair during the VGC.

Lisa expresses that she thanks the Youth WG, Youth Coordinators & Member Societies and IARU for all the work which has been achieved over the past 9 years. Only in 2011 the current Youth Program of IARU R1 has been started. She mentions that we can be proud on what has been achieved. One key comment she urges to Member Societies: “Keep it simple and start organizing amateur radio activities for young persons. Be open and listen to the young persons and do not be afraid to let them organize things. Please give them the support they need.”

The Youth Working Group will be in the right hands with Philipp DK6SP as successor as Chair and Markus DL8GM as Vice-Chair.  This is supported by the entire Working Group. Congratulations to both Philipp DK6SP and Markus DL8GM, they have a great energetic team to work with in the upcoming 3 years, Lisa adds.

Both, Philipp and Markus, stated that they will be continuing the already well-known projects within the Working Group. Moreover, they will focus on even expanding the YOTA program itself, working together with the Member Societies of Region 1 to strengthen the youth activities and help the growth of similar projects in the other two regions.

JOTA JOTI – Jamborees On The Air / Internet Event 2020

By | Publication | No Comments

WHAT IS THE JAMBOREE-ON-THE-AIR (JOTA)?

The JOTA is an annual event in which Scouts and Guides all over the world connect with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. It’s the shear excitement of having a live conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide at some other place in the world that attracts so many young people to this event. JOTA is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared.

The use of amateur-radio techniques offers an extra educational dimension for Scouts. Many grasp the opportunity to discover the world of wireless radio techniques and electronics. Thousands of volunteer radio amateurs assist the Scouts over the JOTA weekend with their knowledge, equipment and enthusiasm.

WORLD SCOUT FREQUENCIES

Scout Frequencies are chosen in a segment where low-power, simple stations are transmitting. This allows Scouts to operate such stations from camp sites and still be able to communicate with others.

Youth on the Air Camp in the Americas Dates Announced for Summer 2021

By | Publication, YOTA Region 2 | No Comments

We recently received the following press release from YOTA Region 2 Camp Director Neil Rapp, WB9VPG:

“The initial camp for young amateur radio operators in North, Central, and South America that was postponed in the summer of 2020 is now scheduled for July 11-16, 2021.

WEST CHESTER, Ohio, July 28, 2020

The summer camp for licensed amateur radio operators ages 15 through 25 that was scheduled to take place in June, 2020 at the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester Township (North Cincinnati), Ohio has been rescheduled. Mark your calendars for July 11-16, 2021. The new dates were chosen after polling the campers who were accepted to attend the 2020 camp, the camp staff, and venue availability. Campers who were accepted to the 2020 camp will have the privilege of registering early for the 2021 camp. Once the early registration results are known, the remaining spots will be open for new registrations. The maximum number of campers was increased to thirty, thanks to additional donations from the amateur radio community. The camp daily activity schedule will remain the same for 2021.

Due to the postponement of the camp, young hams in the Americas were invited to several special online events. The main event was a virtual YOTA Day hosted on Zoom and streamed on YouTube. Virtual YOTA Day included presentations by youth for youth, as well as competitions that could be completed from home. The recording of the event is available for viewing on our YouTube Channel.

Other events included: a week long special event station, a remote station to use during Field Day, a club entry for Field Day, and participation in the YOTA Online monthly program from IARU Region 1.

More information about YOTA in the Americas can be found at our website and at the following outlets:
Facebook, Twitter, InstagramYouTube

We wish them a lot of success with their efforts!

YOTA Oceania – ZL6YOTA Jock White Memorial Field Day Youth Event 2021

By | Publication, YOTA Oceania, YOTA Region 3 | No Comments

We recently received a quote from Team YOTA Oceania lead Benjamin (ZL2BCI) in IARU Region 3 about their future plans.

He says: “YOTA Oceania is looking to run a field day event next year in Wellington, at the Kaitoke camping ground for the Jock White Memorial Field Day. This annual contest is named to honor Jock White, ZL2GX a former NZART Contest and Awards Manager. Our aim is to establish effective temporary HF radio stations, to work as many other New Zealand stations as possible, and to learn to operate in less than optimal band conditions. We are also planning on trying to make contact with some of our Australian counterparts during the weekend. The callsigns we will be operating under will either ZL2YOTA or ZL6YOTA. Hope to catch you on the air on the 27-28th of February 2021.”

We wish them good luck with their efforts and hope to get them down our logs!
