YOTA Summer Camp Croatia – Postponed to 2022

The IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group has to announce the following news.

The YOTA summer camp Croatia, which had already been postponed to 2021 last year, has to be postponed once again to 2022 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This difficult decision was made together with HRS officials (Croatian Amateur Radio Society) following the IARU-R1-wide COVID-19 event cancellation policy (see below).

The IARU Region 1 secretary has been informed about this decision on Sunday, 18.04.2021.

We, the IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group, will keep you updated on any news regarding upcoming in-person events.

IARU Region 1 COVID-19 event cancellation policy (01.03.2021):

The position on the COVID pandemic remains serious and unpredictable. Governments everywhere struggle with balancing the health of their economies with the health of their populations. The vaccine roll-out seems likely to take most of this year and even then, the impact of mutant strains of the virus and national quarantine requirements are difficult to predict.

IARU Region 1 has a number of in-person events planned for 2021 in the Youth, ARDF and HST areas, as well as the planned Workshop for Member Societies. It is not yet certain whether it will be possible to run these events as scheduled.

IARU Region 1 will adopt the following approach:

Youth events scheduled before end-June will not take place. These events make social distancing difficult and we do not believe it will be possible for them to take place.  Other 2021 events will remain in the calendar for the time being. We will review the forecast evolution of the pandemic sufficiently prior to each event and make an announcement about whether it will take place.  Generally this will be four months prior to the scheduled date. Those planning to attend should thus have sufficient time to make the necessary bookings and travel arrangements.

IARU Region 1’s intent is to ensure that any events which take place do so in an environment which respects national requirements for pandemic control and which does not place at risk the health and well-being of those participating.

YOTA Online – Session #12 “The end … but a new beginning!”

Are you ready for our upcoming and last YOTA Online session already?
Did you set your alarms for Thursday, 29.04.2021 – 1800 UTC?

In this newest episode the team will present the main topic “The end … but a new beginning!“. This time we will give you some insights on our recent YOTA Online sessions, talk about our future plans with this and other upcoming projects. Further we will focus on the ongoing pandemic problematic and its possibilities. Join this newest and last YOTA Online session. Moreover, we will also have a special prize draw after you solved our new riddle live on the show. We will give away an ICOM HF and one V/UHF radio and many more things. So, stay tuned, check out our social media channels for any updates and be excited!

WHAT IS YOTA ONLINE?
The Youth Working Group within the IARU Region 1 created a new program called “YOTA online”. In these monthly gatherings we will try to bring the YOTA feeling towards the online community and spread the word that there is youth in ham radio. A YOTA team consisting of active youngsters will present different topics, while answering questions from the community. There will also be a section where different recent YOTA event hosts will be able to present the highlights, while also giving participants the opportunity to share stories. These sessions are also interesting if you want to learn more about organizing such amateur radio events for young people. This will be followed by a Q&A session with the group presenting. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle including a little riddle amongst all participants.

NEW: YOTA Contest 2021

Erding, Germany – Wednesday, 07.04.2021

Team YOTA has been working hard over the last few months to establish one whole new project for the ham radio community. Everyone can take part, it takes place three times per year and only lasts 12 hours. Its aim is to increase the youngsters activity on the air, strengthening the reputation of the YOTA program and demonstrate the support for youngsters across the world.

Let us introduce you to our brand new YOTA Contest!

This years’ sessions will be held on Saturdays 22nd May (0800 – 1959 UTC), 17th July (1000 – 2159 UTC) and 30th December (1200 – 2359 UTC).
We have implemented 8 different categories which also include special ones for youngsters (≤ 25 years old) only. Covering the 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m bands the competition will take place in CW and SSB modes.
The contest exchange used will be the age of the participating operators. Different ages also serve as multipliers during the contest.
Contacts between the own continent are worth 1 point, working DX is worth 3 points but the most points will be achieved by working youngsters. The younger the operator the more points one will get for the QSO.

We, the IARU R1 Youth WG, are very happy to be cooperating with MRASZ, the Hungarian Amateur Radio Society. They are providing the contest log robot and many more things regarding this event.

The contest committee consists of the IARU R1 Youth WG Chair Philipp – DK6SP and Vice Chair Markus – DL8GM. Csaba – HA6PX and Tomi – HA8RT are completing the board.

Once the evaluation of received logs has been completed the various category winners will be awarded with a YOTA Contest plaque.

Ham Radio unable to be held for second year – Web-based alternative planned for original show dates

No get together in 2021: Ham Radio exhibition once again suspended

Friedrichshafen, Germany – This year, as well, the Coronavirus pandemic is maintaining a firm grip on world events. Due to current developments regarding the spread of COVID-19, Messe Friedrichshafen has been forced to make a very difficult decision. The Ham Radio international amateur radio exhibition will not take place in the planned time frame of June 25-27, 2021, but instead will be held from June 24 to 26, 2022.

“It was not an easy decision for us; however, an exhibition like Ham Radio depends on a high level of international participation. Due to the current uncertainties in the travel sector, it is simply not feasible to hold it this year,” explained Klaus Wellmann, CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen, sadly. Project Manager Petra Rathgeber also expressed her great disappointment: “It is deeply regrettable that the event cannot take place as planned. We were so looking forward to our get-together with the industry.” Christian Entsfellner, chairman of the German Amateur Radio Club e.V. (DARC), added: “We support the decision of Messe Friedrichshafen to cancel this year’s Ham Radio exhibition at this early date. Naturally, we are very disappointed that our meeting with friends in Friedrichshafen will not take place, after all. However, the online version of Ham Radio that is now planned to take place from June 25 to 27, 2021, is a consolation that we very much look forward to, as it will offer our members of ham-radio friends some interesting surprises.”

Exhibitors, visitors and participating partners are currently being notified about these changes.

Train The Trainer – Summary report – January 2021

This is a first ever “Train The Trainer” summary report by Youngsters On The Air. Gathering answers and ideas from more than ten societies’ youth teams into one short text, to give you an idea what youth work within ham radio all over the world is about. The report is divided into two categories: “General observations” and “What to learn?”.

General observations

This summary report contains answers from July 2020 to January 2021. The main thing that reoccurred in nearly every report from that time is that the activities were nearly completely down. This is a shame, as community and meeting people are one of the biggest parts of our hobby. Luckily for us, we hams can also always communicate on radio frequencies. This was the case for some, but unfortunately as radio clubs were closed in many countries, others completely lost their ability to operate.

From the reports you can see that ham radio related activities have quickly leaped into online activities. Most of the societies answering the report have had at least some online activities, most common ones being courses and (club) meetings. Some of the societies took online to next level by even having online exams. Several societies also used messaging software’s such as Telegram and WhatsApp to communicate among them. Also skeds, which are scheduled contacts, and other on air activities such as NOTA (Nordics On The Air) Easter activation were organized.

DYM – short for December YOTA Month – was the main activity during December 2020. With Covid restrictions given, DYM seemed to be a success for many societies under those circumstances. Multiple societies said in their reports that they saw a lot of new faces operating DYM callsigns, as well as several answers said that they had made QSOs using QO-100 satellite. The remote operating possibility of 9A0YOTA also made an on the air activity during DYM possible for many youngsters around the world. Every youngster under the age of 26 with a CEPT license had the chance to operate from this big gun station in Croatia. Unfortunately, the flipside of DYM was, that some societies were not able to have any activity at all this year.

What to learn?

Looking at the past TTT reports, it is easy to say that during the current Covid pandemic online events have been “the thing”. However, this is a time to evolve and improve. Community and communication is one of the key ways to get people involved with the hobby. Therefore, to improve this, it’s highly suggested that every society would have at least some way for youngsters to communicate. This could for example mean having a chat group for youngsters. If your society does not have a chat group and you don’t want to establish one yourself, you’re always free to join the big YOTA Telegram group having more than 200 youngsters! Just get in contact with us at pr@ham-yota.com to get access for your youngsters.

Further, online events are easier to approach if they interact the viewers somehow. Having a possibility for participants to comment something or even speak with the organizers is a huge benefit which makes having online events near to “real-life” ones. As said before, there are a lot of different kind of activities that are possible to be held online or directly on the air). Presentations, courses, club meetings. You name it!
