Train the Trainer report – Algeria – January 2021

In 2021 there are some changes to Train the Trainer reports. The biggest of them being that the participating countries are from now on asked direct questions in order to make answering the report easier. The answers in this particular report are from member(s) of YOTA team Algeria.

Main Questions:

How was the last summer in your country when it comes to youth work within ham radio? Did you come up with any new exciting ideas?
We are currently trying the improve upon the skills of our youth, from ham operations to general technical knowledge (Electronics, Math, Physics…)
How have your activities changed in the past six months? Have you been able to hold e.g. online events or activities within a smaller group of people?

We had video conference calls with online courses as well as preparing for the certification exam online.

What kind of activities and operating possibilities did you have during the recent December YOTA Month? How did your activities differ from last year, and how did people respond to them?
It was quite a disastre as most radio clubs in Algeria were closed most of the time. We could however manage remote operation on the stations.

What kind of problems are you facing with youth work in your member society?

Youngsters are really busy with their studies as there was a huge delay to start courses. Thus, they do not have time for a hobby these days.

Anything else that comes to your mind or you want to share?
Try and focus on the aspect of HamRadio that is of interest for the particular group of youngsters. Some might be more interested by data encoding than by radio operation. Diversity is a blessing!

Train the Trainer report – Germany – January 2021

in 2021 there are some changes to Train the Trainer reports. The biggest of them being that the participating countries are from now on asked direct questions in order to make answering the report easier. The answers in this particular report are from member(s) of YOTA team Germany.

Main Questions:

How was the last summer in your country when it comes to youth work within ham radio? Did you come up with any new exciting ideas?

Due to the pandemic, many licence courses could no longer take place. We therefore set up our own video conferencing platform using BigBlueButton for our society, on which initially only licensing courses could take place and later – after further expansion of hardware resources – the meetings of the local clubs could be held online.

The advantage of hosting this system on our own is that we have no problems regarding GDPR and every incumbent can use it for free after authenticating with their member ID. For this purpose, we (DARC Youth department) have programmed a special website for the conference room administration, which can access the users and roles in the DARC members database.

A planned HAM first-semester course at the local university of applied sciences was converted into an online-course. Unfortunately, the practical part of the course was reduced. Only a small “trainee-contest” on UHF was performed (similar to the CQTU contest, https://dk0tu.de/contests/cqtu/), as this event was compatible to social distancing rules.
How have your activities changed in the past six months? Have you been able to hold e.g. online events or activities within a smaller group of people?
The operation of the video conferencing platform has kept us completely busy. But the effort is worth it, as courses and meetings of local clubs now take place every day. We have also started a seminar series where every 14 days there is a lecture on, for example, contesting or logbook programmes or how to operate measurement technology or do QSOs on QO-100 etc. that all members can attend online. Okay, it’s not just for the youth, but it’s cool.
What kind of activities and operating possibilities did you have during the recent December YOTA Month? How did your activities differ from last year, and how did people respond to them?

As we coordinate radio operations in DYM with an online calendar and chat group, there is little difference from last year. However, some participants could not use the club station as usual because they were closed due to the pandemic.

Nevertheless, we have welcomed new faces to the operator team this year, who have been very active in using the callsign DB0YOTA from home.

What kind of problems are you facing with youth work in your member society?

We have ~982 local clubs. Some are very active and can adequately mentor young newcomers. Some have an average age of over 60 and need to be gradually rejuvenated before proper youth work can begin here. It makes no sense for a 16-year-old to come to a group of people who, to put it bluntly, only talk about their illnesses and the good old days of tube amplifiers.

Anything else that comes to your mind or you want to share?
Try to connect the young people as much as possible. We have seen during our YOTA Subregional Camp in 2019 that lots of youngsters don’t know each other even when they only live 20km apart. Therefore, we have established our own Telegram channel where we announce youth activities directly, as this information often does not reach the young people through official society channels (e.g. website or club newsletter).

December YOTA Month activity – DYM 2020

The entire month of December, several youngsters under the age of 26 will become active with YOTA as suffix in the callsign. The idea behind this is to show the amateur radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham radio waves.

Usually you hear YOTA stations on air from our summer and subregional camps throughout the year. This season has been an exception. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all our camps and events had to be cancelled. Therefore, nearly no possibilities were left to hear YOTA stations on the bands.

Hence, we as Team YOTA want to show the world that the youngsters still want and can be active on the bands during this difficult time. Help your local youngsters to get on the air throughout the December YOTA Month following your national health guidelines. Either you are a supporting elmer or under 26 years yourself, contact your society’s youth coordinator to be active with your national YOTA callsign. If your society did not apply for one yet, feel free to encourage them to do so of course. It will be a pleasure to work a lot of new youngsters on the bands!

Every ham radio operator can support the youth worldwide! By making a QSO with them, they can improve their skills on air and learn more about geography and ham radio abbreviations among others. The youngsters will be happy to get some attention and exchange information. Licensed and unlicensed youth will be making QSOs, be aware this could be their first radio contact ever and give them a chance to experience a possible new hobby.

As every year, there is again an award program available. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award for free. This program promotes the radio activity on the air waves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Last year we had high hopes with the QSO goal of 100.000 QSOs. With the help of youngsters within amateur radio, we absolutely crushed the goal with nearly 130.000 QSOs achieved by 47 stations. This year we are aiming for the same target. So, participate in December YOTA Month, and help us to achieve this goal again in December 2020!

YOTA online – Session #6 “YOTA DIY – How to be QRV in CW?”

Are you ready for our upcoming YOTA online session already? Did you set your alarms to Thursday, 29.10.2020 – 1900 UTC?

In this newest episode the team will present the main topic ” YOTA DIY – How to be QRV in CW?” We will also have a prize draw after you solved our new riddle live on the show. So, stay tuned and be excited!

WHAT IS YOTA ONLINE?

The Youth Working Group within the IARU Region 1 created a new program called “YOTA online”. In these monthly gatherings we will try to bring the YOTA feeling towards the online community and spread the word that there is youth in ham radio. A YOTA team consisting of active youngsters will present different topics, while answering questions from the community. There will also be a section where different recent YOTA event hosts will be able to present the highlights, while also giving participants the opportunity to share stories. These sessions are also interesting if you want to learn more about organizing such amateur radio events for young people. This will be followed by a Q&A session with the group presenting. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle including a little riddle amongst all participants.

We will be streaming live again on our Youtube, Facebook and Twitch channels. Furthermore, we try to stream via the QO-100 geostationary satellite in DATV mode again.

QSO Today HAm Expo 7.8. – 9.8.2020

From 7th to 9th of August YOTA from IARU R1 and R2 will be taking part in the first virtual ham expo ever: “QSO Today Ham Expo”!

The event will include a whole new virtual platform with virtual booths from 45 organisations with lots of information about their matter. There will also be an auditorium for presentations just like we are used to. The event is accessible globally with both computers and phones. Nordics On The Air Activation 2020

What?

As you may well know, NOTA Norway was scheduled to be held in the upcoming weekend from 10.-13.04. The event was postponed/canceled until further notice because of the COVID-19. On the NOTA camp, there would have been two HF-stations with the callsign LA1YOTA spreading the voice of youth all around the world. 

Even though NOTA is not going to happen during this Easter, we still want to unite as Nordics and give other amateur radio operators a chance to talk with us. As of this, we will be having NOTA activation skeds during the upcoming weekend! 

When?

Following stations will be on the air on the written days: 

  • LA1YOTA on Friday 10th

  • OH2YOTA on Saturday 11th

  • SK8YOTA on Sunday 12th

  • TF3YOTA on Monday 13th

 

The stations will be on HF on told days in variable times depending on the operator. We will be reporting about the exact times and frequencies on our social media’s @hamyota_official and @nordicsontheair as well as Youngsters On The Air Telegram-group. 

Awards!

For this event, we will not be sending any QSL-cards. Instead, we will have an award system with a limited amount of awards. More info coming later.

Subregional YOTA Camp Hungary 2020

Hungary 2020 – a YOTA sub-regional ham camp – open for all youngsters

Following many years of participation in YOTA programs, this time Hungarian youngsters are going to host a subregional camp, supported by MRASZ, Hungarian Radio Amateur Society and several well-known local hams. We are enthusiastic and hopeful about this event held in South-West Hungary, to where we would like to invite Central and Eastern European youngsters to participate, meet each other and enjoy a long weekend full of ham radio related programs in a hospitable, close-to-nature environment.

Who?

If you’re 15–25 years old and interested in amateur radio, you are welcome to this event. Newcomers to radio hobby are invited as well as more experienced youngsters such as traditional ham operators, ARDF or HST participants. We only ask you to be a member of one of the IARU member societies.

When?

Just at the beginning of the summer season: 11-15 June 2020.

Getting to the site​: Car, or public transport buses. If coming by public transport, there will be local hams waiting for arriving participants ​ preferably in Budapest​and helping to find the regional bus station from where there are regular buses to the city of Paks. From Paks, we can take participants to the venue.

Activities, program

We are working on the full program right now, but we can say it’s going to be exciting. It will include interesting workshops and tests, continuous operation on 2 HF, 1 VHF and 1SAT stations, the possibility of learning basics of morse code in 3 days, and visiting the Paks Nuclear Power Plant.
In case of early arrival / late departure please send us a notification. It is possible to spend a night at MRASZ HQ guest rooms, in Budapest.

Costs

Most of the event is funded by IARU R1 and the MRASZ funds. We are asking 30 EUR from each participant. Accommodation, 3 meals a day and activities are all covered.
